Whenever ask cites a biblical passage in it's newsletters, the citation takes one of three forms:
For example: lets say they cited
Joshua: 1-3
or Joshuah 1:3
or Joshuah X, (Comma)X
I have a feeling that the first one is to read the first three verses starting with the first chapter "1:3" Means to look for chapter 1 then read verse 3
but I'm at a loss when it uses a comma, I wanna be able to follow along a little better

Hello Hyunki,
If there is a comma after a number, then another number after it, it means it is referencing those scriptures only and not the ones in between. So, Joshua 1:3, 5 means the author is referencing only verses 3 and 5, and not 4.
If you happen to see Joshua: 1-3, that is a mistake as the author meant Joshua 1:3. If you happen to find a mistake like that on the ASK site, please let them know so that it may be corrected. They will appreciate your input.
Joshua 1:3-5 would of course mean verses 3, 4, and 5.
Thanks for your question!
Ken
